Description
The work Three Pieces for Solo Clarinet was written in 2017 and is intended to be
presented as a unified work. The first piece, “El juego, Nivelillo” (The Game, Nivelillo),
was written to reflect the flight of the dragonfly—its flexibility, control, and the contrasts it
achieves in flight. In ancient times, the dragonfly was considered a symbol of wisdom
because of the mastery it displays while flying. The second piece, “Impromptu lejano”
(Distant Impromptu), seeks to express the experience of meditation and the relationship
between external and internal phenomena. Open spaces contrast with fast sections of
an unexpected character. The exploration of the perception of the internal and the
external is at the heart of this piece. The third piece, “Recitativo Sutra” (Sutra
Recitative), is inspired by the Zen Buddhist sutra “Ho shin no ge.” In the first section, the
clarinet is presented in a highly vocal register, developing a flexible discourse. This
vocal section then seeks to transcend its own limits and reach a state of maximum
expression, followed by a state of greater calm and repose. Finally, the opening section
returns as a reminder of the beginning.
